The Cowbells Were Ringing at Bakery Square 🔔🀄

Our very first Yinz Mahj Open Play at Bakery Square is officially in the books — and honestly? We’re still smiling about it.

What started as an idea to bring mahjong players together in Pittsburgh turned into a room full of laughter, strategy, new friendships, and a whole lot of cowbell ringing. Every time someone yelled “Mahjong!” the conservatory lit up with cheers, celebration, and the unmistakable sound of the Yinz Mahj cowbell making its rounds.
And yes… the championship belt made its debut. 🏆
From victory poses to dancing celebrations, the Yinz Mahj belt quickly became part of the fun and may already be developing legendary status. We had players proudly showing it off, posing for photos, and fully embracing the chaotic joy that makes mahjong so memorable.

But more than anything, this event proved something we already suspected: Pittsburgh has an incredible mahjong community. Players came from all over the area, many arriving solo and leaving with new friends, future tablemates, and plans to come back next month. The vibe in the room was exactly what we hoped Yinz Mahj would be about — welcoming, energetic, supportive, and just the right amount of competitive.
To everyone who joined us for this inaugural event: thank you. Truly. You helped create something special.
A huge thank you as well to Bakery Square for hosting us in such a fun space (with coffee, restaurants, and post-mahj shopping). Shout out to Jeni's for donating a free ice cream to every attendee.

And the good news? We’re just getting started. Yinz Mahj Open Plays at Bakery Square are now happening monthly, and we can’t wait to do it all again. Whether you came to the first event or you’ve been thinking about joining one, we’d love to see you at a future game.
Check out the photo gallery from the inaugural event — including championship belt moments, cowbell celebrations, gameplay shots, and a whole lot of Pittsburgh mahj energy.
Let’s keep spreading mahj (n’at) across the ’Burgh. 🖤💛
